Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about UAE visa insurance requirements, coverage options, costs, and compliance.
Is health insurance mandatory for all UAE visas?
Yes. Since January 2025, the Federal Mandate requires active health insurance for all visa applications and renewals across all seven Emirates. This applies to employees, investors, dependents, and domestic workers.
What is the Essential Benefits Plan (EBP)?
The EBP is a government-regulated basic health insurance plan designed for employees earning below AED 4,000/month. It provides essential coverage at controlled prices (approximately AED 650 – 850/year) and meets all visa compliance requirements.
What happens if I don't have insurance when applying for a visa?
Your visa application or renewal will be rejected by the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship) and GDRFA systems. Additionally, employers face monthly fines for each employee without valid coverage.
Can I use my Dubai insurance in Abu Dhabi?
Insurance policies are typically emirate-specific due to different regulatory authorities (DHA for Dubai, DOH for Abu Dhabi). If you relocate, you may need to switch to a provider authorized in your new emirate.
How long does the insurance process take?
For standard applications, insurance can be issued within 24-48 hours. EBP plans are often activated within the same day. The policy is then automatically synced with immigration systems.
What documents do I need for visa insurance?
Typically required: Emirates ID or passport copy, visa copy (for renewals), employment contract or salary certificate, and recent photograph. Specific requirements may vary by emirate and visa type.
How much does visa insurance cost in the UAE?
Costs vary by coverage level and emirate. EBP plans start from AED 650/year. Standard plans range AED 1,500 – 3,500/year. Enhanced plans with comprehensive benefits can range AED 4,000 – 12,000/year.
What is the difference between DHA, DOH, and MOHAP?
DHA (Dubai Health Authority) regulates Dubai. DOH (Department of Health) regulates Abu Dhabi. MOHAP (Ministry of Health and Prevention) covers the Northern Emirates (Sharjah, Ajman, RAK, Fujairah, UAQ). Each has specific requirements.
